Daren Newfield MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon with dual fellowships in Sports Medicine and Foot/Ankle Surgery. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has 25 years of extensive experience in Atlanta covering Level 1 Emergency Trauma calls and in teaching Resident Surgeons to become competent physicians. As a member of the Spine Intervention Society, he is also adept in pain management modalities delivering safe Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Injections. As a leader in his field, he has served as Department Chairman of Orthopedics at Northside Hospital and Vice Chairman of Orthopedics at Atlanta Medical Center.
After completing his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Florida Atlantic University in 1989. He attended Emory University School of Medicine and graduated in 1994. Like his father and both older brother’s before him, Dr. Newfield pursued a career in Orthopedics. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in 1999. He participated in two separate fellowships: Sports Medicine at Alabama Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham under Larry Lemak MD in 2000 and Foot/Ankle Surgery with the world-renowned surgeon Roger Mann MD in Oakland California in 2001.
After all his training was completed, Dr. Newfield returned home to Florida to practice with his father in the family business of Orthopedic Surgery. Treating patients and doing surgery with his father fulfilled a life goal and made all the years of training seem worth it. Upon his dad’s retirement, Dr. Newfield moved back to Atlanta to enter private practice.
Dr Newfield lives to help others. As a Chief Resident he obtained a Visa for a young Romanian girl and her family to come to America for him to perform multiple limb lengthening procedures on her. In 1998 Dr. Newfield volunteered his time and travelled to El Salvador to perform spine and extremity surgery on underprivileged children with deformities. In 2010 Dr. Newfield volunteered his time to travel on a medical mission trip to Haiti after the horrific Earthquake. There he saved many lives and limbs, but the poverty and devastation left a lasting impression on him.
Daren Newfield MD has always had an extreme love of animals, even volunteering and fostering many dogs through local charities. In 2004 when an abandoned puppy with a broken femur showed up on his doorstep, Dr. Newfield performed the surgery to repair the dog’s leg and adopted him too. Many years later, when that same little dog needed open heart surgery, Dr Newfield flew the only surgeon in the world who could fix his friend (and his 5 member surgical team) from Tokyo to New York to perform the surgery. He and Tripod were inseparable until his passing in 2018. Dr. Newfield still misses his little buddy.
For many years, Dr. Newfield and his amazing wife used to enjoy riding skateboards together around West Midtown where they lived in a warehouse on an old farm with dogs, goats, chickens, fish, llamas and a donkey. Now having 3 young children, the family has "grown up" recently and moved to a house in Sandy Springs. Dr Newfield has a fabulous, beautiful, nurturing wife and three loving, imaginative daughters waiting for him to get home at the end of the day.
Even after 25 years of working surgical experience he still enjoys "fixing broken things" as he calls it, with a smile. He treats his patients with the utmost care and a tough love approach that has earned him much respect from all of his students, patients and their families.
